Cal is a friend of Jason's and a fellow associate of Brian Heder, the kind of laid-back, deeply paranoid conspiracy theorist America specializes in producing. He doesn't trust the Coast Guard, isn't convinced birds are real, and spends his downtime monitoring Coast Guard radio chatter with a beer in hand and a few suspicious browser tabs open. Content with a quiet, low-stakes existence — beer, mini-golf, pool, and casual paranoia — Cal represents the comfortable rut Jason is trying to climb out of. As Jason and Lucia start reaching for bigger scores, Cal's relaxed orbit is likely to get pulled into trouble he never asked for.
